For some, the idea of a walking holiday can be daunting. After all, the very concept of a 'holiday' implies a reduction in physical activity, sometimes to extreme levels, such as in the so-called 'fly and flop' experiences. The avid hiker will already be on board with the concept, but may want something to inspire them. For both these types of travellers, a good travel book will be a great source of motivation. The former kind can be inspired by the stories contained in these volumes, while for the latter they will ring all too true, and potentially remind them of why they love going on a walking holiday so much.
In this spirit, we have chosen some of the best books to serve this exact purpose. Our list does not possess strict parameters, nor is it by any means a comprehensive example of books about or relating to travel. However, most of the tomes included herein should make for perfect travel companions for a ramble somewhere in the world.
Into The Wild. Alex McCandless was young and ill-prepared when he randomly decided to leave his comfortable upper-middle-class existence and search for meaning in the backwoods of America. He did, however, possess plenty of spirit and determination, two traits that will definitely resonate with adventure aficionados.
On The Road/Big Sur. Jack Kerouac did not traverse America on foot (at least not entirely), but the loose, rustic feel of his adventures and experiences sometimes closely mirror those experienced on the course of a walking holiday.
Around The World In 80 Days. Again, Phileas Fogg did not exclusively use his feet in his version of a world tour - yet what rambler would not dream of seeing that large a portion of the world in just one go?
Michael Palin's Around The World In 80 Days. Unrelated to the previous title, but still a strong argument in favour of a walking holiday, with its luscious illustrations and enticing detail this is a delightful companion.
Any fantasy book. Most of these feature reluctant heroes forced to go on quests, in worlds where there is no such thing as motorised transport. As such, these characters - of which Frodo, from Lord Of The Rings, is a perfect example - often find themselves forced to travel large distances on foot. Of course, this can just as easily be a deterrent as a motivator, but hiking fans will certainly identify with the idea of getting from point A to point B over several days, or even weeks.
These are, of course, just a few of the tomes walking enthusiasts can use to find motivation in while indulging in their favourite pastime. So on your next adventure, make space for a book in your backpack, and remind yourself why you have the hobby you do!
